(Romans 2:4 NKJV) “Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and long suffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?”

Repentance does not mean simply apologizing, but instead undergoing a change of mind and heart that produces changed behavior. An encounter with God has that type of power.
